Basics of food photography

Writer's picture: ElinaElina

Have you ever found yourself in the middle of a bookshop, looking through the cookbook and drooling? That's because a food photographer is an excellent artist and storyteller. With terrific photos, you can show the great food you make and create a visual mood for your cafe or online shop. In this guide, I'll give you simple steps to bring your photos to the next level. Remember, we eat with our eyes first.

Prepare your food to be photo-ready

Using props such as plates, cutlery, and linens can add depth and interest to your food photos. Cross sections can work really well for layered food. Choose props that complement the food you are photographing and be mindful of their color, texture, and size. Good value props can often be found in charity shops.

  • Prepare your cutlery and plating.

  • Ensure the food is freshly cooked and well presented.

  • Hide any imperfections.

Get the lighting right

Soft, diffused light works best for food photography, so try to shoot in natural light or use a softbox light to achieve this look.

  • Light from the side rather than the front.

  • Watch for harsh shadows.

  • Use natural light whenever possible and softer light when not.

Framing

Pay attention to the composition of your food photos. Use the rule of thirds to position your food in a visually appealing way and consider how the background complements the food. Pizza often look good from above whilst drinks are best from a 45º angle and anything with layers should be straight on.

  • Photograph from different angles.

  • Use warmer, more appetizing colours that are true to life.

  • Use depth-of-field to focus on the most delicious aspects of your photo.

Edit your photos

Post-processing is a crucial part of food photography.

  • Use editing tools to enhance the color and contrast of your photos.

  • Adjust the saturation and brightness levels as needed.

  • Think about where you are posting the photo to make sure that the best parts of the photo fit within the frame.

Rules are made to be broken. Be bold and get creative. Make your food photos stand out with composition, colour, unique angle and perspective. Food photography is a fun and creative endeavor that requires careful planning, attention to detail, and a love for food. By following these tips and experimenting with different techniques, you'll be on your way to capturing stunning food photography images.
